A driver who fled from a car wreck in Merseyside in which a woman lay dead and another was screaming in agony has been given a five-year sentence.
Michael Bowes, 18, ran away from the accident which killed one Angela O’Neill, 32, and injured her friend, Donna Langley, in Wirral.
Bowes, of Prenton, drove at high speed despite the women’s pleas for him to slow down, Liverpool Crown Court heard.
He admitted causing death by dangerous driving at an earlier hearing.
The court was told that Bowes had purchased the car, which had faulty brakes, despite having no licence or insurance.
‘Selfish interests’
The accident happened about a month after he bought the car when he lost control of the Vauxhall Astra and it smashed into a lamppost in Wallasey.
Bowes and two male passengers fled, leaving Miss O’Neill and Ms Langley, stranded in the wreckage. A raised the alarm.
Bowes handed himself to Merseyside Police two days after the accident claiming to have no recollection of the crash.
Judge Mark Brown, sentencing, told him: “You left the scene when Donna Langley was screaming for help. Your only concern was for your own selfish interests.
“You had a to ensure the safety of your passengers but instead you displayed a callous and indifferent attitude.”
The judge sentenced Bowes to five years in a young offenders’ institution for causing death by dangerous driving.
He was also sentenced to four months, to be served concurrently, for failing to report the accident.
